Use Your About Me Page!

eBay can provide you with a great revenue stream. Whether you’re looking to just make some extra cash or you’re looking to replace your full time income, eBay is a great opportunity.

However – as you build your eBay business it’s important to integrate your online strategies into other income generating streams outside of eBay. Using the right techniques, you can actually leverage eBay’s platform in building your non-eBay business. This begins with your About Me Page!

Let me start if with a quick qualifier. If you are new to the Internet or relatively new to eBay you’ll want to build up your eBay sales first. At the same time, prepare yourself for the world outside of eBay. If you’re already successfully trading on eBay you’ll want to implement these strategies sooner than later!

The first question to ask yourself is: “Do I have a non-eBay website?” Avoid the question: “If I don’t have a non-eBay website, how will I create one?” because we’ll answer that in another newsletter issue.

If you’ve answered “no” to the first question above you can register a domain name at a number of places online. My preference is HighFiveDomains, but there’s lots out there to choose from.

The next question is: “How many domain names do I need?” Again, the answer will depend on your Internet Marketing experience and future plans. I register, on average, 10-15 new domains a week. Every time I think of a new idea, I check HighFiveDomains to see if the name is available. I never know when a good domain is available that I’ll need for the future.

About ME

As you begin to use eBay as a promotional vehicle the first step is to create a killer About Me Page. It’s against eBay’s policies to include a non-eBay website (clickable or static link) on your eBay listings. However, eBay does allow you to advertise your personal website and other webpages from your About Me page. Here is the About Me links policy, taken from eBay.com:

You may link to your own Web store or Web site. However, you may not directly offer any non-eBay merchandise on the About Me page itself.

  • eBay does not permit its users to place the following types of links on your About Me pages:
Links that directly offer any non-eBay listing or merchandise on the About Me page itself.
  • Links to other online trading sites or pages, including auctions and fixed-price formats. Learn more
  • Links to sites offering the same merchandise for the same or lower price (including the Buy It Now price).
  • Links to sites offering merchandise or information not permitted on eBay

On your About Me page, you may link to your own Web site or individual Internet store where you are offering to trade, sell or purchase your goods or services. However, you may not link to any page within online trading sites that offer goods from multiple sellers either in a fixed price or auction format. About Me pages that do not meet this policy may be removed.

TIP: You can link to your individual website containing similar products.

At some point (if not now) a light bulb should go off for you – if you can direct people from your listings to your About Me page you can generate a ton of traffic to your website. Whether you put a link on your listings to your About Me page, or even in the subtitle of your listings, there’s a ton of great strategies to get people to your About Me page. One main advantage of this strategy is to begin building a database of prospects for future sales.
